PASSION, NOT PROFIT

D/V Tenacious and its crew are passionate about preserving maritime history, promoting the importance of shipwreck salvage, and inspiring the next generation of divers and ocean explorers.

We do not profit from product sales.

Every dollar of profit we earn is split equally between two organizations that are close to our hearts: The New Jersey Maritime Museum and The Boston Sea Rovers Summer Internship Program. New Jersey Maritime Museum houses the most extensive collection of maritime artifacts in the Garden state. Its staff works tirelessly to preserve and share New Jersey's rich maritime heritage through public education and outreach. The Boston Sea Rovers Summer Internship Program offers young divers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel the the globe working alongside professionals in marine science, exploration, and conservation—guided by members of the world’s oldest and most prestigious dive club, the Boston Sea Rovers.

So go ahead—grab some gear, support good causes, and know you're making waves by both preserving the past and shaping the future.

The Adriatic Affair: A Maritime Hit-And-Run Off the Coast of Nantucket

In August of 2024, D/V Tenacious announced the discovery of the 1856 transatlantic passenger steamship Le Lyonnais. The liner collided with the American sailing vessel Adriatic off the Coast of Nantucket on November 2, 1856. Adriatic’s captain, Jonathan Durham, rendered no aid and left the steamship to fend for herself. 114 people died in the collision and in the days that followed.

Durham did not count on a hero, French sailor Jean-Marie-Louis Choupault, who helped 18 Le Lyonnais passengers and crew adrift on a small lifeboat in the brutal North Atlantic. Durham continued with business as usual, including delivering a load of timber to France. French authorities seized his ship and put him on trial, but his adventures did not end there. News of his daring escapades made him a celebrity in America. The outbreak of the Civil War ended further inquiry into what became known in diplomatic circles as “the Adriatic affair,” and the victims of the disaster never received justice.

In 2024, after a search that spanned decades, a team of explorers from D/V Tenacious discovered, dived, and identified the wreckage of Le Lyonnais of the coast of Nantucket on the eastern edge of Georges Bank.

Discovery team member Jennifer Sellitti has written a new book entitled, "The Adriatic Affair: A Maritime Hit-and-Run Off the Coast of Nantucket," (Schiffer Publishing, March 2025). It details the fascinating true story of the collision and its aftermath. An epilogue she wrote following the team’s discovery chronicles the search for Le Lyonnais and describes what it takes to chase shipwrecks far from shore and in dangerous waters.

CELEBRATING 15 tenacious years

Since 2010, the captain and crew of D/V Tenacious have been chasing the ghosts of the North Atlantic—uncovering forgotten shipwrecks, rewriting maritime history, and pushing the limits of technical diving.

Prior to becoming the Tenacious of today, the vessel operated as a fishing boat off the coast of Maryland. Her captain, Joe Mazraani, completely redesigned this NOVI as a multi-day offshore work boat sporting a solid dive platform.

From lost liners to wartime casualties, Tenacious and her crew have racked up an impressive list of discoveries along the US Eastern Seaboard. But it's not just about what’s down there—it’s about bringing those stories back to the surface. Whether it's sharing maritime history or advancing the sport of technical diving, our mission is to explore with purpose and passion and share it with members of the public through community outreach, public displays and exhibits, and educational programs.
